Newberry LibraryFounded in 1887, the Newberry Library stands as a vital center for the preservation and exploration of the written word. To honor its role as a guardian of language, translation, and cultural memory, this project reimagines the library’s identity through the lens of reading rhythm and the structure of knowledge. Drawing inspiration from a spatialized punctuation system, the design reflects the pauses, flows, and movements of thought.

Logo
Logo juxtaposes serif and sans-serif typefaces to symbolize the dialogue between traditional and contemporary literature. This pairing reflects the library’s role as a space where the boundaries of translation and linguistic context are explored, connecting historical depth with modern expression.

Printed CollateralsUsing a system inspired punctuation marks, the design translates pauses, flows, and connections into a visual language. Each of them weaves together typography, archival imagery, and a coded line system to evoke how visitors move through
the library.

Wayfinding SystemThe Newberry Library’s wayfinding and index system combines clear directional language with a coded visual rhythm, creating a navigational experience that is both functional and reflective of the institution’s identity.
